In my last post, I wrote about my experience of being certified as an Executive and Team Coach with Marshall Goldsmith Stakeholder Centered Coaching (sccoaching.com). As I have continued my development through eLearning with Marshall Goldsmith, I have been pondering a question. If we know the type of people we want to be, why don’t we become those people? For instance, many of us would agree that we want to become more active listeners that truly value what others contribute. We may also have the goal of being more persuasive and influential, to allow our ideas to have a more significant impact. Maybe our goals include wanting to delegate more effectively, to empower others, and free ourselves up for other things. So what is stopping us? Marshall Goldsmith makes it clear that changing our behavior takes courage, humility, and discipline.
But most of us need something else. Most of us need help. We need someone to guide us and a clear process to follow to get from where we are to where we know we should be. In theory, it is possible without those things, but undertaking a fundamental personal change without some help and guidance is a massive challenge. And why go it alone when there are people trained and waiting to help you?
Personally, I am excited about coaching others to help them become what they already know they want to be. Often it is just that nudge of guidance and structure, combined with their own courage, humility, and discipline that gets them there. That is a fantastic thing to be a part of.
