Attract passive job seekers: Your answer to fill the candidate shortage

Traditionally, we are used to active job seekers. They either want a better opportunity, they were laid off, resigned, or they needed to get a job quickly to make ends meet. It’s easy to identify what an active seeker is by the way they pursue the many opportunities to get the best job for them. Today has changed though. It’s harder to find those people and it’s no longer the only option. That’s why we now look to passive job seekers as an untapped potential of great talent.

WHAT DOES A PASSIVE JOB SEEKER LOOK LIKE?

Consider these flags:

  • They want to develop themselves and increase responsibility. If their current job doesn’t give them that freedom, then they’ll be open to other opportunities.
  • They are seeking change. When you talk to them, do you sense that they are considering transitions?
  • They are unsatisfied with the culture. More often than not, there are phenomenal employees that want to get a new job. But they don’t know how to go about it. You could be that answer and find a great experienced team member.
  • They want to relocate. People want a change of environment all the time. Even more, people want to live somewhere new but don’t have the resources to do it on their own. Your location might be attractive to them.

HOW DO I ATTRACT PASSIVE JOB SEEKERS TO ME?

  • Become that place everyone wants to be out. Invest in your team culture. Give employees the opportunity to try out their ideas and innovate. Especially in this time of age, more employees value this than small salary differences.
  • Make an impression. Steve Jobs told his company’s first CEO when trying to recruit him, “Do you want to sell sugary water drinks for the rest of your life, or come with me and change the world?” Share the big vision, the “Why”.
  • Give them leadership. On the Craig Groeschel Leadership Podcast, Craig, a renowned expert on organizational leadership, often emphasizes how we shouldn’t hand out roles or responsibilities… give them leadership. Hire the best so that they can do their best for your company.
  • It’s not just money. Remember, passive job seekers feel like their lives are stable in their current season. But they want more than what they have. When attracting them, the most important thing is to show them what that is—a purpose to live for.
